Acrostic No. 53

A hidden sentence, revealed by the answers to its clues. The clock starts when you press start — not before.

How to play
  1. The board is a hidden sentence, one square per letter.
  2. Answer a clue and its letters appear in the sentence, wherever they belong.
  3. Or type a word you can read out of the sentence — it fills in where it stands, and completes the answers those letters belong to.
  4. Every letter belongs to exactly one answer, and nothing is marked wrong: a word that is not in the puzzle simply does not take.

Lyric
John Newton
Amazing Grace · verse one · 1772

Newton captained slave ships before he took orders, and wrote the verse for a sermon preached at Olney on New Year's Day 1773. The wretch of the first line is himself. The tune everyone sings it to, New Britain, was only married to the words in America some sixty years later.

Clues

Two ways in. Type an answer from the list above and its letters appear in the sentence. Or type a word you can guess from the sentence itself — it fills in where it stands, and completes the answers those letters belong to. Every letter of the sentence belongs to exactly one answer, and the small number on a tile is its position in the sentence. Hover a clue to see which tiles it owns.
