Acrostic No. 57

A hidden sentence, revealed by the answers to its clues. The clock starts when you press start — not before.

How to play
  1. The board is a hidden sentence, one square per letter.
  2. Answer a clue and its letters appear in the sentence, wherever they belong.
  3. Or type a word you can read out of the sentence — it fills in where it stands, and completes the answers those letters belong to.
  4. Every letter belongs to exactly one answer, and nothing is marked wrong: a word that is not in the puzzle simply does not take.

My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean · Scottish folk song · published 1881

Usually said to be about Bonnie Prince Charlie, who fled to France after the failed Jacobite rising of 1745 — bonnie being the Scots word for handsome as much as pretty. Once it was in print it crossed the Atlantic and became a fixture of American campfires and college songbooks.

Clues

Two ways in. Type an answer from the list above and its letters appear in the sentence. Or type a word you can guess from the sentence itself — it fills in where it stands, and completes the answers those letters belong to. Every letter of the sentence belongs to exactly one answer, and the small number on a tile is its position in the sentence. Hover a clue to see which tiles it owns.
